Load banks simulate an electrical load, which is why they are sometimes referred to as a dummy load. They allow a power source to be commissioned or tested to ensure it can handle the real life demands it will be subjected to without it having to be connected to its normal operating load. The electrical energy is dissipated as heat by the resistive elements.
Depending on the application, load banks will operate indoors or outdoors and may be installed in a fixed location or be portable and moved from site to site. Different designs are available to suit each application.
Resistive load banks provide 1.0pf (power factor) and can be used to test a generator engine at its full kW rating however resistive load testing alone may not reveal issues related to the generator's response to reactive loads. A resistive reactive load bank, either as separate devices or combined in a single load bank, facilitates testing at lagging power factors (typically 0.8pf) and can provide a more comprehensive load test. Resistive reactive load bank tests are sometimes specified by engineers or within a testing standard. Capacitive load banks facilitate testing at leading power factors.
JTP Power can provide resistive, reactive, and capacitive load banks or combinations of these.
We can provide load banks for applications that include:
- Testing data center electrical supplies, generators and UPS systems, and providing a controlled heat load for air-conditioning systems.
- Testing of gas and diesel generator sets with generator load banks.
- Providing additional load to generators to prevent wet stacking or to optimize the load profile.
- Battery and UPS testing.
